Our visit to the Fertőzug and Lake Fertő
The "Fertőzug" is a VERY flat region which is squished between Lake Fertő and the Hungarian border to Austria. Since it used to be part of Hungary before 1921 it has a Hungarian name. In German it is known as the "Seewinkel". It is a very popular destination for cycling trips (due to its flatness, good wines and abundance of cycle paths).
The boys and I went up there on Sunday, so as to leave the girls to celebrate Bella's birthday party in relative (boy-free) peace.
First we went to an animal park which had all kinds of animals that one finds on the steppes. The Lake is considered to be the last "steppe" lake in Europe. We saw various kinds of cows, weasels, wolves, pigs (lots of pigs), and some birds and other stuff.
Then we drove to Illmitz, and rode the bikes out to the Lake, where we hopped on the ferry to Mörbisch, which is on the western shore, just north of Sopron. We got some ice cream there, and then headed back across. The boys chatted up the Hungarian lady on the 2nd boat. Then they played at the playground, and then we rode back to the car and headed home...

Logans add video aspect
Marina was able to figure out how to post video that yawl can watch, so we put up the kids' Mother's Day program.
The link is down there at the bottom, where is says "Mothers Day viedo".
The poems and singing is in Hungarian, but the jist of it can be understood by Mothers everywhere...

Gearing up

So we're gearing up for a season of cycling over here this year, with specific plans calling for nothing in particular and general plans generally hoping that we'll be able to get some riding done.
I have been taking the boys out as often as possible. Patrick is starting to develop some strength and Kevin needs to just work on basic skills. Marina also got a new bike this spring and has been riding it to work much more. She is very happy with it. And there appears to be a slim chance that we could get the tandem outfitted with the cranks for the kids, which would open up some new opportunities...
I picked up a tent while I was over in the states and we got some sleeping bags for the kids a few weeks ago, so the camping equipment side of things is also starting to develop. Now I just hope we can get it together.
Here's a picture from about a year ago, on the mass ride here in town that is held at the end of May each year.
Happy Mother's Day
Thanks to all the Moms out there, in particular to my Mom who managed to bring up four pretty "well-adjusted" kids!
Here's a picture of Marina from 1999, back when Bella was born, attending to one of her first Mom duties...
Bella will be 8 on Friday!

Mother's Day

To my Mum, and hers and to all the Mums in the world, here's a Hungarian poem for now. Happy mother's day!
M
Dsida Jenő: Óda az édesanyámhoz
Dicsértessél ma Te is itt a földön,
mert esküszöm, hogy nagyon nagy a Lelked
s a földi szívek földig borulását
Te mindenkinél inkább megérdemled.
Nézem, látom a teltzsákú sok évet
és érzem: nekem már semmit se hagy,
de büszke leszek mindéltemig arra,
hogy Te vagy nekem az, aki Te vagy.
Te vagy az, aki mindenkinek ad,
a szenvedőknek virrasztást, vizet,
Te vagy, akinek mindenki adósa,
s akinek jóval senki sem fizet.
... Hadd legyek hát én az igazi zengő,
kis régi gyermek rombadőlt tanyán
és harsogjam el hozsannás hitemmel
Dicsértessél, dicsértessél, Anyám!

blast from the past (revisited)

I just came across this picture of Bella, which practically proves that the coin trick with Patrick back in 2001 was pre-meditated...
